Thank you for joining us on Insights! You just completed your master’s degree in architectural conservation. Can you tell our readers a bit more about your background, and what led to your interest in this field?

As a brief introduction, I’m a Jordanian architect and researcher. I received my master’s degree in architectural conservation from the German Jordanian University in 2020 after my bachelor’s in architectural engineering from the Applied Science University in Amman in 2010.

I have had professional opportunities over nine years of practical architectural experience, including design, restoration, and maintenance projects. I also taught for a brief period. Furthermore, I participated in a UNESCO program for heritage preservation in Petra. I chose to specialize in a particular branch of architecture, modern industrial heritage, concentrating on the preservation of modern industrial buildings in the Arab region, Jordan in particular. At present I am preparing a research paper on this topic.

My interest in architecture and tangible and intangible heritage began long ago. About fifteen years ago, I became passionate about documenting heritage landmarks in Jordan and the region using digital methods, especially free knowledge initiatives such as Wikipedia (and its sister projects). I started by becoming a Wikipedia editor, and later an administrator, for the Arabic side of the encyclopedia. My contributions centered on architectural, historical, and geopolitical topics related to documentation of written and visual memory in the region. Examples include articles on architecture of Palestine, tourism in Jordan, and hundreds of other articles in Arabic and in English. I have also coordinated one of the world’s largest photo contests—“Wiki Loves Monuments”—regionally for the Levant, focused primarily on global cultural heritage. Most recently, my experience in open-access knowledge has also included engagement with the Open Jordanian Heritage initiative organized jointly by ACOR, Wikimedia Levant, and the Jordan Open Source Association. I have given presentations to the initiative’s edit-a-thon participants about Jordanian heritage documentation through a number of online platforms. Many people took part, all of them heritage enthusiasts.

My specific field of expertise, architectural conservation, includes study of renovation, preservation, adaptive reuse, rehabilitation, and reconstruction. I have always been motivated to continue my learning, expanding my personal knowledge in areas I consider important. I think heritage conservation must be placed higher on national priority lists. At the same time, “heritage” itself needs to have an appropriate definition and approaches for future generations.

Finally, my professional associations today are deeply connected with this field of study. I work in restoration materials and construction chemicals between Baghdad and Amman.

Tell us more about your thesis project!

Although industrial heritage is considered to be an important part of modern global heritage, the subject faces continued marginalization in the Arab world, including in Jordan. Resulting from a lack of clear and inclusive definitions of cultural heritage, a number of industrial heritage sites have not received protection, nor have they been addressed by scholarly research. Thus, most of these sites, built in the 20th century, have been disappearing little by little or even been marked explicitly for demolition.

In my thesis, I undertook a detailed study of Jordan’s modern industrial heritage, beginning with its historical emergence. The concept of modern industrial heritage is closely linked to the Arab Renaissance (the Nahda) of the late 19th and early 20th century and the period of early state-building in the region. My thesis analyzed a rare example of this kind of heritage: the Rutenberg Hydropower Plant in Baqoura, in northern Jordan. I set up a comparison between the plant and another national example of industrial heritage, the Electrical Hangar located in downtown Amman. I also looked at other similar local examples in order to more deeply demonstrate the connections between such facilities and Jordanian state-building, broadly conceived. Throughout the project, I gained a deeper understanding of Jordan’s modern industrial heritage through a variety of research methodologies, including archival research, textual analysis (especially focused on the impact of manufacturing on development projects in the region), and general field surveys for a number of sites that are arguably representative of Jordanian industrial heritage (see images in inset). I synthesized a national case study and comparative analysis.

In addition, my research evaluated the study site with a brief and informal administrative plan for preservation, with the goal of paving the way for future preservation decisions for this and other industrial heritage sites in the country. This could even serve as preparation for detailed design for the site following possible renovation.

This study presents a different approach to understanding Jordan’s modern industrial heritage. Such heritage is important not just for its historical, architectural, and geopolitical value, but for its meanings in relation to preliminary periods of modern state-building projects in the Kingdom’s history. Therefore, the study calls for incorporation of these sites into the scope of “national heritage” and for putting the spotlight on modern industrial heritage as a means of motivating people’s sense of place, memory, and national identity. Links were made between theoretical frames of study and preservation, on the one hand, and experimental results, on the other. Put plainly, the study seeks to raise awareness about the meaning, essence, and value of modern industrial heritage, representing an era that was short lived in Jordan and the region. Moreover, this awareness must be developed not just among the public, generally speaking, but specifically among policymakers and institutions, public and private.

In your fellowship report, you write about “the plurality and diversity of modern industrial heritage” in Jordan. Can you summarize what you mean by this for our readers?

The buildings and sites in Jordan one might classify as “modern industrial heritage” are relatively few. However, they are nonetheless diverse and important in their historical, symbolic, structural, architectural, and sociocultural value. Jordan’s modern industrial heritage includes dams, power plants, train stations, bridges, grain silos, historic factories, water channels, and more. All of these bore witness to the founding period of the Jordanian state. Most of the sites and structures were erected in the 1960s and ’70s, which was an era of expansion and growth. They are concentrated in the northernmost parts of the kingdom.

On a personal level, do you have favorite examples of adaptive reuse of heritage structures?

Around the world, there are a great many remarkable examples of adaptive reuse of heritage sites, including industrial sites. Built during Ottoman rule, the Silahtarağa power plant in Istanbul experienced a sustained period of dereliction and decay before being converted into the SantralIstanbul, one of the city’s most important cultural centers. We could also take up European examples, such as in Denmark, Germany, and Britain, as these nations were pioneers in industrial heritage conservation, pursuing reuse, rather than demolition and dismantlement. In Copenhagen, for example, grain mills have been converted to residential apartments, and an old heavy-fuel power plant is today simultaneously a ski resort and a site of clean energy production and waste recycling.

Last but not least, there is the electrical plant of Ras al Ain in Amman and its reuse as an open cultural center. This is among the most important local examples of adaptive reuse of industrial heritage, in my opinion. Furthermore, it stands out in the region. Renovations to the site showed respect for its original building elements while distinguishing between them and recent additions. I am honored that the director of that work, Dr. Rami Daher of Turath Consultants, was my thesis adviser for my master’s degree. He is one of the biggest influences on my professional life.

The Ras Al-Ain Hangar, following interventions, in use for Amman Design Week exhibitions in October 2019.
In the time of COVID, most of us are getting out and about less often, although, on the flip side, we may be getting to know our own immediate neighborhoods a lot more (due to restricted travel). Do you have suggestions for how readers can continue to explore Jordan’s diverse built heritage during the time of COVID?

Unfortunately, the current pandemic and its associated lockdowns have greatly restricted the ability of people to visit archaeological and touristic sites in Jordan and the rest of the world. This has motivated us as architects, archaeologists, and heritage and tourism professionals to think outside the box in order to find practical solutions for restoring connections between vast swaths of tourists and enthusiasts and various touristic and architectural attractions. One such solution is virtual reality, technology that a number of regional institutions have already begun to work with. The Jordan Tourism Board, for example, began disseminating VR experiences to promote virtual tourism to a number of the kingdom’s heritage sites as a way to make up for the distinct lack of visitors.

From another angle, I work currently on a project to link archaeological sites in an effective manner with their representation on Wikipedia. Smart devices can empower visitors to access detailed information in a simple yet interactive way.

We, as members of the local society, including formal institutions and organizations, are called upon to come together for sake of preserving our cultural inheritance. We must work together to promote visitation to archaeological and heritage sites by reconsidering traditional methods of addressing them.

Under a hot October sun, from which I had nothing but a winter cap to conceal my face, the famous downtown of the Eternal City looked like a bunch of half-fallen columns emerging from a pile of rubble. “Disappointing” would be an understatement: I had patiently waited for this moment for nearly fifteen years, ever since my eyes were first dazzled by the BBC’s fascinating documentary Ancient Rome: The Rise and Fall of an Empire. I had since consumed a ton of books, novels, encyclopedias, and documentaries to satisfy my curiosity for the great city—only to find out that it was already gone. How, if so little of it remains, did Rome come to be so famed compared to any other ancient place?

While looking at the relics of the Phoenicians at the Carthago: The Immortal Myth exhibition under the shade of the nearby Colosseum, a new question crawled into my mind: “Can my native heritage ever be as familiar to my people as ancient Rome has been to so many?” As for many other important questions, the answer wouldn’t be simple. I was willing, though, to start looking for (or rather “working” toward) an answer, the search for which was to significantly shape at least the next year in my life, starting from that 2019 fall, and for possibly much longer.

Phoenicians and encyclopedias

Fifteen years ago, when I would spend my sweet, post-school afternoons watching dubbed documentaries, it wasn’t only Rome that I was introduced to, but also its fiercest rivals: the Carthagians. The way the story was told, though, Carthage was significant only in terms of its conflict with Rome. The narration may have sounded neutral, but I never got to see Carthage the way I saw Rome. The downtown of Carthage was not restored; the amazing city was not brought to life. Its streets, palaces, gardens, and, most importantly, people, barely showed up on screen at all. I could never internalize the image of the Punic capital the way I vividly did Rome’s, and, in short, I felt something was missing.

Ruins of Carthage in September 2019.
Although we may seem to be living in an age of abundant knowledge, it is fair to say that there is increasing awareness among academics that this knowledge is neither sourced nor distributed equitably. While Greco-Roman studies are taught in hundreds (if not thousands) of universities, Punic studies (often called “Phoenician-Punic” studies) are barely existent. Moreover, what little knowledge we have of this outstanding Mediterranean civilization is relegated to a few learned academics. There’s very little common media, colorful books, or intriguing documentaries about it to enjoy. And there is even less lying beyond the language boundaries of English.

Leontocephaline figure from Nabeul, Tunisia, exhibited in the Colosseum. (Photo by Abbad Diraneyya. CC-BY-SA 4.0.)

I realized this when I tried to learn more about the Phoenicians, my “ancestors.” I quickly exhausted the contents of the 2006 Arabic-language internet on the subject, which amounted to a few pages of text from a new website called “Wikipedia.” Although I decided to take matters into my own hands (by producing a mostly plagiarized eighty-page book), my frustration from the lack of information had a lasting effect. This early experience is what led me to become self-sufficient in English and to become a Wikipedian who aspires to make knowledge available to others.

I had nearly forgotten about what led me to become a Wikipedian in the first place by the time my path crossed with the old Phoenicians again. It was late 2019, in the last few months when travel was still an aspect of normality, and I was able to take the opportunity to travel around as both an Erasmus+ student and a Frederick-Wenger Memorial Fellow of ACOR. By then, I had been volunteering as a Wikipedian for over a decade. But, as I gazed at a leontocephaline (lion-headed) figure in the Colosseum exhibit (originally excavated at Nabeul, Tunisia), it all came back. I was my young, frustrated self all over again.

An open heritage of the Levant

Heritage can be a complicated thing. I’m hardly certain of what my own heritage is, given my own supposedly mixed Arab-Kurdish ancestry and a family history distributed across the Middle East, which is itself a melting pot of many great ancient and medieval cultures. No matter what our genetics or origins are, though, we all strive for a past to cling on to. Our culture, lifestyle, music, literature, and art are shaped by a mixture of the past and present: a compromise of what is popular nowadays and of what has been passed down to us from those who preceded us. This harmony with the “old” is probably the source of meaning for the “new” in most cultures, but it’s something I have always felt lacking in my own. My heritage has typically felt restricted to rusty museums and dusty books, without considerable significance to many people beyond.

How do we make heritage relatable and present in people’s lives, following the example of Rome’s continued fame? I have considered this question many times, and varying answers have come to mind. One thing is essential, though: if there’s nowhere for people to find information, and nowhere for them to learn about their past, even if they are willing to go the figurative distance, then there’s hardly a way for it to be relatable. Luckily, I have already been involved in arguably the most accessible information and knowledge repository of our time: Wikipedia.

Elements of this endeavor were already in motion by mid-2019. A local photographer and amazing colleague, Bashar Tabba’a, had been in contact with Wikimedia Levant (a local volunteer group of Wikipedians, for which I have been the chief coordinator since 2017). Bashar, quite generously and passionately, offered to donate a significant part of his photo collection (more like a “photo database”) covering archaeological sites in Jordan. At the same time, some of my colleagues and I had been in touch with ACOR to discuss potential collaborations with Wikimedia Levant. Finally, in fall 2019, the same season during which I was finally able to experience Punic-Roman history in person for myself, all these threads came together.

An example of Bashar’s awesome collection: a 6th-century church in Tell Abila (part of the Decapolis), in northern Jordan.
The project came to be called Open Jordanian Heritage. It is an ambitious effort to make room for the heritage of Jordan on Wikipedia and its sister projects by donating pictures, building a database, and writing articles (in both Arabic and English). All the data, images, and other information contributed through the project are openly available under a CC-BY-SA (Creative Commons Share Alike) license, freely accessible to anyone curious about the history of Jordan.

Over the past year, Open Jordanian Heritage became a major project in the local Wikimedian community. We have organized four editing workshops to train new Wikipedia editors and prepared them to contribute to heritage articles. Two of these events were offline, in the pre-COVID age, and two took place virtually thereafter. The project has, in sum, contributed high-quality photos of over one hundred archeological sites across Jordan, many of which had no freely available picture before. About a hundred people have participated as volunteer editors, contributing more than 60,000 words and adding around 300 references to the free online encyclopedia.

People enthusiastically contributing to the Jordanian heritage on Wikipedia in October 2019.
On a personal level, however, even as this project was taking off, I still felt a need for even more connection. As a student of foreign languages, I was impressed to learn a few years ago (rather late in my education) that the Phoenicians invented the world’s first known alphabet. I was intrigued to learn more about it, and ironically—although perhaps predictably, at this point, given my experiences—I found that there were few resources about this remarkable language available online. Today, I feel I have somewhat satisfied my linguistic curiosity (and heritage needs) by acquiring, a few months ago, the ability to read and write in the ancient Phoenician script (even if only a handful of words and some grammar). Currently, I’m working on the entry for the Phoenician language on Wikipedia, hoping to make it a well-researched source of information. (This is still in an early stage of development, as it can take many months to write a good Wikipedia entry, especially alongside a full-time job.) I’m also hoping to contribute to a user-friendly language guide, later on.

The Phoenician alphabet, as it appears in my below-average handwriting.
Ibn Fadlan

While ancient heritage is a part of my identity that I feel has been especially neglected in our present, it is only one part of this story. Ever since I came back from my study-abroad program, I have spent a lot more time reading medieval Arabic literature. One example that has greatly influenced me is the travel narrative of Ibn Fadlan.

A page from the original manuscript of Ibn Fadlan’s narrative, discovered in Mashhad, Iran in 1923. (Scan courtesy of Universitetsbiblioteket i Oslo.)

Ibn Fadlan was a Muslim (either Arab or Persian) traveler who ventured on a mission from Baghdad to Volga Bulgaria in 921–922. While that may seem like a distant part of heritage, with many of its events taking part in lands I have never seen, it had quite the opposite impression on me. His travel narrative, widely praised for its accuracy and objectivity, seemed to me to present a fascinating cross-section of the medieval world through the eyes of a Middle Easterner. The long travel experience even felt relatable to my own recent trip to foreign Europe.

Much the same as my frustration about Rome, I felt similarly about Ibn Fadlan. In my second year at university, I had to read about 3,000 lines of Beowulf, a story renowned not only as a good read but also as a significant piece of the national heritage of England. This epic poem has been deemed so important that it became known far and wide (including in my university in Jordan), getting republished and repackaged for children, adults, and scholars. It even inspired an amazing novel, The Hobbit, that has become perhaps more prominent than the original and influenced my own childhood.

Rough route of Ibn Fadlan’s travels. The dashed line indicates a unconfirmed route. (Map by محک. CC-BY-SA 4.0.)

Ibn Fadlan’s narrative, in my opinion, is no less. An engaging story with nerve-racking events, it’s a fascinating piece of literature. It features the only known eyewitness account of the Volga Vikings’ ship-burial ritual, firsthand experiences of various historical events, and thrilling adventures full of politics, power, and religion. Yet, his work remains little known by the descendants of the traveler himself, inheritors of his own culture, with few people reading him among either students or the wider public. (Notably, his narrative did inspire a well-known novel and major motion picture—a bad one, I’d say, with much more Beowulf than Ibn Fadlan going on.)

Just like I did fifteen years ago, I have decided to take matters into my own hands, with fingers crossed for a better result. Having read tons of literature and taken many classes in writing, and aspiring to contribute more than mere encyclopedic knowledge, I have decided to present Ibn Fadlan’s tale from my own point of view, as an original and Arabic-composed literary work. The manuscript is currently closing to 30,000 words and already covers the majority of his story. I’m hoping to complete the novel—still untitled— early next year.

I also believe that, if better publicized, Ibn Fadlan’s original narrative (in its “raw form”) has the potential to become very popular reading. As a next step, after my novel, I’m hoping to dedicate time to republish the narrative itself with an enjoyable and informative introduction, maps and photos of the places he visited (or the ruins of these places), and other visuals. As engaging as Ibn Fadlan’s writing is on its own, I realize far better now, after digging up information for my story, some of the really interesting context that the narrative took place in. Taking advantage of what I learned as a student, I have come to believe that there’s a real need to republish Ibn Fadlan’s narrative in a new Arabic version, with a decent introduction and footnotes that can relay this context and interesting history to present-day readers.

Working through these varied ideas and projects, today I feel slightly more connected to my own heritage. Over the next months and, quite possibly, years, I will be looking to continue these projects and perhaps start new ones that can help revive my heritage and culture and to make it more widely understood and accessible. I’m really thankful for all the support I have received from the Frederick Wenger Memorial Fellowship and from so many great colleagues at ACOR, Wikimedia Levant, and beyond. And I hope we can all work together toward a future more connected to the past—which is what has made us who we are.

I specialize in luminescence dating and its applications in archaeology. Despite recent successful developments of luminescence dating in geology, the technique still has limited applications in archaeology. In my work, I attempt to employ these new techniques to resolve chronological questions at archaeological sites, particularly where organic materials are scarce for carbon dating. For example, rock surface luminescence dating is a new approach that has been established in the last few years to define the date when the rocks were last exposed to the sun. In archaeology, we could use the approach to define when rocks were used for construction. The approach could also be useful for dating widespread megalithic structures. In Jordan, I was successful in dating the construction from enigmatic megalithic structures including Khatt Shebib structure (dated to ca. 400 BCE) and a so called Desert Kite structure in southern Jordan (dated to ca. 8000 BCE). I presented my work on dating the Desert Kite site at the ASOR Meeting in 2017.

I also worked with young geo-archaeological sediments such as those at Tell Maqass and Tell Damiyah, and with older sediments such as those at the Dead Sea and Wadi Hasa. At the ASOR 2019 Meeting, I had the opportunity to present my work on Tell Maqass with two different approaches of luminescence dating for the same sample, which acts as an internal age control for the site.

The ASOR Annual Meeting is one of the most important meetings in Near Eastern archaeology in North America. To me, it is an opportunity to follow up with the recent works in Jordan archaeology, and to network with other professionals and archaeologists. The ASOR Annual Meeting is also where I establish research collaborations with other scholars. I am grateful to ACOR and ASOR committees because without the travel award, I wouldn’t have had this opportunity to take part.

In 2003, the discovery of a Byzantine era lead coffin in the village of Jerash caused a wave of excitement throughout the region, especially for historians and archaeologists, but also for Jerash locals looking forward to the influx of tourists who may want to see the sarcophagus. Bilal Al Burini, ACOR’s 2019 James A. Sauer Jordanian Fellow, conducted research on the coffin for his master’s thesis.

Scientists move the Jerash Lead Coffin to a new location for conservation and maintenance. Photo courtesy of Bilal Fawaz.

My name is Bilal Fawaz Mohammad Al-Burini. I graduated with a master’s degree from the Department of Conservation and Management of Cultural Resources under the Faculty of the Archaeology and Anthropology Department at Yarmouk University in 2019. I work in the Department of Antiquities in Jerash / the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities.

I first heard about ACOR from the Department of Conservation and Management of Cultural Resources at my university, and from other Yarmouk students who talked about grants that they received from ACOR.

I submitted my ACOR fellowship application with my thesis proposal on the conservation of lead coffin from the end of the fourth century and the beginning of the fifth century AD.

This unique sarcophagus was found accidentally in Jerash’s Wadi Addeir Gharbi region in 2003.* The coffin was transferred from the site to the archaeological excavation depot at the Directorate of Antiquities of Jerash. This coffin is one of the most important and rare artifacts in this area, both for its great size of over two meters in length and for the images on its surfaces.

Lead Coffin Conservation

This is the second lead coffin found in Jordan from the Byzantine era (another was found in Umm Qais). This discovery is a great tool for assessing the status of people living in Jordan during the early Byzantine era. This particular sarcophagus was probably made in Jerusalem or Lebanon and then carried all way to Jerash at sometime in the fourth century, an expensive and difficult task, leading researchers to believe that the person inside the coffin must have been of considerable social importance.

The coffin is decorated with early Christian symbols and Greek mythological themes. It dates to a period of gradual change in Roman burial practices between the 2nd and 5th centuries AD, namely the transition from cremation to inhumation.

I was involved in the treatment of the coffin conservation, including cleaning, consolidating and securing of missing parts, and drawing and documenting the coffin. It is now on display at the Jerash Archaeological Museum.

I was very fortunate to gain this support. I would like to thank ACOR for offering me a grant in April 2019. This money helped cover my research costs by paying for conservation materials, a modern laptop, transportation costs, and printing costs. I would like to thank everyone at ACOR, and I would recommend that every student and researcher take advantage of the opportunities and the amazing library that ACOR offers.

Bilal Fawaz Mohammad Al-Burini

Tuesday, September 24, 2019 at 6pm at ACOR
The Petra Papyri: A city’s diary from the 6th century CE By Omar Al-Ghul
Please note video recording is in Arabic only.

About the Lecture:
In 1993, an archive of Greek papyri was uncovered in the Byzantine Church in Petra. The approximately 140 texts belong to a private archive dated to the 6th century CE. The papyri contribute significantly to our knowledge about Petra and its inhabitants at that period, only a few decades before the emergence of Islam. The lecture paid special attention to the information the papyri provide about the daily life in Petra and languages spoken and written there.

About the Lecturer:
Omar Al-Ghul is an epigraphist with special interest in Northwest Semitic inscriptions, the Dead Sea Scrolls and the history of Arabic. He is a faculty member at the Faculty of Archaeology and Anthropology at Yarmouk University.

On July 2-3, 2019 ACOR and the National Library of Jordan co-hosted the annual skills-sharing workshop for galleries, libraries, archives and museums (GLAM). This was the third annual workshop that ACOR has organized on the topic of digital archives, and it was the best-attended by far. We were delighted to have over 60 participants from 18 different institutions take part in the two-day workshop focused on current and future methods to better capture, preserve, and share knowledge about the past… Click here to read the full text.
